Abstract
A finely divided product comprising silica together with a basic compound of a metal whose salts form a precipitate with alkali metal silicate in aqueous solution, for example, zinc, magnesium or aluminium, is precipitated by interacting in aqueous solution an alkali metal silicate and a salt of the said metal in the presence of an alkaline reacting salts, for example, an alkali metal carbonate or sulphide. If an aqueous solution of sodium silicate containing sodium carbonate is reacted with an aqueous solution of a zinc salt a precipitate comprising silica, zinc hydroxide and basic zinc carbonate is produced which, after drying and grinding, may be used as such as a rubber filler and also as an activator instead of zinc oxide. The product may be heated to 300-700 DEG C. in order to convert the basic zinc carbonate to zinc oxide. By decomposing a product containing zinc with acid, for example, hydrochloric acid, a very finely divided silica is obtained which may also be used as a rubber filler.
