Abstract

728,962. Washing granular materials. DAVIS, N. L. May 27, 1952 [May 6, 1952], No. 13471/52. Class 82 (2). A sink and float apparatus for the separation of coal and like materials comprises a horizontally arranged, partly-cylindrical drum open at its top having an outlet for the heavy medium at or near its top and an inlet for the medium in the form of a manifold extending the length of the drum and arranged within the latter a little above its bottom, in which the manifold is open along its lower surface so that the medium flows downwards on entering the drum and in which rotor vanes are provided which move over the inner cylindrical surface of the drum so as to create a gentle upward current from its bottom. The apparatus comprises a drum 1 open at the top and having therein a rotor 5 with streamlined perforated vanes 24. Raw material is supplied at 26, a pivoted wall 28 preventing material that catches between the vanes and the shoot from being crushed. Inner plates 27, 31 are provided to prevent material from slipping out of the influence of the vanes. Medium is supplied through a duct 34. Part of this medium is used to sweep away the refuse deposited in shoot 32. The other part flows through a manifold 50 which discharges downwardly and evenly over the whole area of discharge.
