Abstract
Textile fabrics composed wholly or partly of regenerated cellulose are impregnated with an aqueous solution of an amino-aldehyde resin-forming components including an acidic catalyst, heated to form the resin, and further heated in the presence of an acidic substance in an atmosphere containing not less than 20 per cent of superheated steam. The acidic substance may be the residue of the acidic catalyst from the resin formation, the fabric not being washed between the resin formation and further heating. The fabric may be heated to form the resin in an atmosphere substantially devoid of steam and, prior to this step, the fabric may be dried on a stenter or machine for producing controlled compressive shrinkage and the dried fabric may be calendered, embossed, glazed or pleated. The further heating may be at atmospheric pressure and the superheated steam content may vary up to 100 per cent superheated steam. The resin formation may be at a temperature between 130 DEG and 180 DEG C. and the further heating at temperatures up to 110 DEG C. The resin may be urea-formaldehyde or melamine-formaldehyde and the molecular proportions of the resin-forming ingredients may exceed 1.6 to 1 of formaldehyde to urea or 3 to 1 of formaldehyde to melamine. The acidic catalyst may be ammonium thiocyanate, ammonium di-hydrogen phosphate, ammonium chloride or aluminium acetate and the resin composition may incorporate latices of natural or synthetic rubber, stearamido-methylpyridinium chloride, octadecyloxymethylpyridinium chloride, a polysiloxane which imparts water repellent properties, or a wax emulsion. The fabric may be of viscose rayon and may include nylon. Specifications 675,705, [Group VII], 704,143 and 727,889 are referred to. The Provisional Specification also refers to Specifications 695,703 and 713,002.
