Abstract

Textile materials are immersed in an aqueous colloidal silica solution and there is then added a metallic salt capable of producing in solution a positive ion having an ionic charge of at least three, so that silica is deposited upon the textile material. The rate of deposition of silica increases with increase in quantity of the metallic salt added and also with increase of the pH value of the solution, but a uniform deposition is obtained with pH less than 7. The silica solution may vary up to 30 per cent by weight concentration, but concentrations of the order of 0.05 per cent are preferred. The metallic salt may be added in the ratio by weight of 0.5 to 2 : 1 relative to the weight of silica. The textile materials may be immersed in a bath of water to which the silica solution is afterwards added with stirring. The water may be acidified prior to the immersion of the materials, or the colloidal silica solution may be acidified, or the metallic salt may be added in aqueous solution which may be acidified. The metallic salt may be aluminium sulphate or acetate, alum, chrome alum, ferric chloride or sulphate or ceric ammonium nitrate. Acetic or hydrochloric acid may be used for the acidification. The colloidal solution of silica may be buffered to a constant pH with a solution of sodium acetate in acetic acid. The materials may be after-treated with a cationic softening agent, suitably at 40 DEG C. Textile fibres, yarns or fabrics of wool, cotton, silk, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate or nylon may be treated.
