A ventilator adapted to be secured over an opening in the roof of a building to be ventilated comprises a rectangular throat 15 formed of two outwardly facing channels 11 and two end plates 16, which support side baffles 23, a cover member 18 comprising two flaps 19, 20 being disposed above the throat. The flaps 19, 20 are pivotally mounted on separate hinges 27, or on a common hinge, not shown, suitable sealing means being provided to cover the adjacent edges of the two flaps. In the absence of such sealing means a gutter 31, Fig. 4, fixed between the end plates 16, communicates with transverse side gutters, not shown, to drain away leakage water. The flaps 19, 20 may be counterbalanced, e.g. by arms 30 attached to the pins of the hinges 27. For operating the flaps the pins of the hinges 27 are fitted at their one ends with bell crank levers 28 which are connected to a cable 29 to a point of operation, within, or exterior of, the building. The flaps 19, 20 may be operated together, or independently, by suitable mechanism, e.g. electric or mechanical apparatus which may be controlled by a thermostat. Upturned lips may be formed along the free edges of the flaps 19, 20 which may be of arcuate section. In an alternative arrangement the flaps 19, 20 are hinged along their outer edges to the upper flanges of the channels 11, the inner edges of the flaps when closed, meeting above a drain channel.
