727,589. Feeding articles to machines; endless conveyers. BRIERLEY, COLLIER &. HARTLEY, Ltd., W. May 8, 1953 [May 8, 1952], No. 11598/52. Class 78 (1). A feeding device for onions (or the like) comprises a hopper 12, and an endless conveyer 21 having spaced carrier elements 20, each adapted to receive and carry forward one article, and a take - up station 18 to locate an onion for engagement by a carrier, and means 15 for orientating the articles whereby they roll so as to align themselves in the transverse direction of the conveyer. As shown, endless conveyer 21 is formed of three chains 23, 24, 25, which together form spoon-shaped elements 20 for reception of individual onions. The centre chain 25 then engages rack 33 which shakes up the onion which, if wrongly placed, is dislodged by plate or brush 34, but if correctly placed is carried by the outer chains 23, 24 to a topping and tailing machine (not shown) Alternatively the said chains deliver the onion on to reversely moving side conveyer bands, the onion being pushed forward to the said machine by the pusher of an endless belt overhead. Sprocket 26 jogs the flap 17 of the hopper through pivoted finger 37. Specification 650,653 is referred to.
