A priming arrangement for a centrifugal pump comprises a supplementary 'impeller driven from the main driving shaft of the pump and interposed between the main suction pipe of the pump and an air or gas exhauster. The shaft 5 of the supplementary impeller 4 is driven through bevel gearing 6 from an extension 3 of the shaft 2 of the centrifugal pump 1. Gas or air is drawn by an exhauster 13 from the main suction pipe 9 by way of vents 9a, a stopvalve 8a, the impeller 4, and pipes 11 and 12. The impeller 4 allows the passage of the air or gas, but rejects the liquid when the latter eventually rises to the level of the impeller. Liquid is thus prevented from reaching the exhauster 13. In the event of the exhauster being started up before the main pump 1 or of the latter inadvertently stopping while the exhauster is still running, a float-operated valve 15 opens a connection to atmosphere and breaks the vacuum, thereby preventing the liquid from reaching the exhauster 13. The pump 1 may have a vertical shaft, with the impeller 4 located at the driving end of the shaft.
