Abstract

726,784. Moulding hollow rubber and like articles. ELASTINE PROCESS & DEVELOPMENT, Ltd. March 8, 1952, No. 6112/52. Class 87 (2) [Also in Group VII] A hollow elastomeric article such as a boot, whose wall thickness varies over its surface, is made by coating the inner surface of a mould with an appropriate fluid, e.g. of vinyl copolymer, heating to set and partially cure this coating, introducing further fluid so as substantially to fill the mould and then heating the mould differentially over its surface so as to gel, and partially cure, a coating of varied thickness, then removing excess fluid from the mould, as by inverting it, heating to a final cure and stripping from the mould. If desired, flock or a reinforcing material such as a fabric sole or lining may be applied to the coating before final cure, or a metal arch support may be inserted between the two coatings. The two coatings may be of different colour. The mould is preferably a thin-walled metal mould made, for example, by coating a wax form with colloidal graphite and electro-plating with nickel to 1/500 in. thick. The differential heating may be achieved by shielding parts of the mould 10, Fig. 5, from the infra-red heating lamps 31 by a shield 30. Suitable fluids comprise rubber' latices or synthetic plastics such as a compounded copolymer of vinyl chloride acetate.
