Abstract
Polyvinyl pyrrolidone, a water-soluble polymer, is used as an additive to snuff, chewing or smoking tobacco, or as a filter for tobacco smoke. Smoke filters may contain the polymer itself, as on paper or cotton fibres impregnated or coated therewith, or insolubilized gels thereof. Polyvinyl pyrrolidone may be added to tobacco leaf before processing or at any stage thereof, as by spraying in aqueous solution; it may be added together with humectants (glycerine or glycol), flavouring materials, chlorophyll or chlorophyllin. Processed cigarette tobacco may be dry mixed with powdered polyvinyl pyrrolidone or have a solution of polyvinyl pyrrolidone in isopropyl alcohol sprayed thereon. Powdered polyvinyl purrolidone may be placed in the hollow mouth-piece end of a cigarette and retained by a cotton wad.
