Abstract

725,625. Hand-irons. SCHREYER, E. P. June 23, 1953 [July 2, 1952], No. 17330/53. Class 138 (2). In an electric steam iron comprising a boiler B affixed to a sole plate 16, an electric heating element 23 in heat conductive relation with both the sole plate and the boiler, a steam dome 38 at the roof of the boiler extending over the upper end of a steam tube 27 rising from the floor of the boiler, and a filling opening 31 provided in the steam dome 38, a removable closure unit C for the filling opening is mounted on a carrier 85 which has a hand-hold G in heatinsulated relation to the iron, a gasket ring 52 is affixed peripherally to either the closure C or its seat and the closure unit is retained in closing and sealing relation with the filling opening by releasable latch means acting between the closure carrier and the boiler. The closure unit C may be mounted on the handle H which is pivoted at 47 and provided with latching means to hold it in its open and closed positions. A lever 59 pivoted in the handle at 60 has at its lower end a hook 58 adapted to engage in an opening in a bracket 54 fixed to the boiler B. A lever 67 pivoted at 68 in the rear handle pillar has a latching hook 66 adapted to engage in a notch 62 in a latching bar 61 when the handle is pivoted to the upright position shown in chain lines. Unlatching of both hooks 58 and 66 may be effected by means of a single push button 77 mounted on an extension 78 of a link 70 pivotally connected at 72, 73 to the levers 59, 67 respectively. The hooks 58, 66 are biased towards their respective latching positions by a spring 75 interposed between a shoulder 76 on the link 70 and one of several pairs of guide lugs 74. The handle may have a removable upper portion 79. With the handle latched in its upright position, the iron may be temporarily supported as shown in Fig. 7. The handle, thus latched, also forms a convenient hand grip whereby the iron may be inverted in order to drain the boiler, the steam done 38 then acting as an emptying funnel. The closure unit C is resiliently urged against the rim of the opening by a spring 44 which allows venting of the steam under excessive pressure. The closure unit C is self-aligning with the opening 31, being provided with a shank 42 which is received in a keyway slot in a metal plate 39 screwed to the handle. The steam tube 27 may be arranged eccentrically with respect to the opening 31 to facilitate filling. It is closed at its upper end and provided with one or more steam openings 27a which may be shielded by an anti-splash baffle 38<SP>1</SP>. A baffle plate 36 is provided with drain openings 83, and a depressed portion 84 to indicate when to stop filling. The tube 27 communicates with a triangular depression 32 in the lower face of the sole plate provided with a closure plate 34 having steam ports 33. A thermostat 15 is adjustable by means of a control knob 21. In a modification, Fig. 8, a sheet 90 provides a heat-insulating air space 91 between the sole plate 16<SP>1</SP> and the chamber 32<SP>1</SP> to prevent overheating of the steam. The sheet 90 may be of metal or of insulating material and is engaged by a series of projections 92 extending downwardly from the sole plate. Specification 628,085 is referred to.
