724,886. Woodworking machinery; sawing. NIELSEN, R. A. Oct. 5, 1953 [Oct. 9, 1952], No. 27259/53. Class 145. A machine for dividing round sticks 23 into chamfered dowels comprises a pair of endless belts 8, 15 with parallel runs spaced apart by the diameter of the dowels 24a to be cut and one belt is driven at a greater speed than and in the opposite direction to the other belt, the sticks thus being moved forward and at the same time rotated so that fixed trimming cutters 19 form annular grooves in the sticks and then fixed inclined saws 20 part off the dowels 24a. The upper belt 8 is of substantially the same width as driving drums 6, 7 and the lower belt is comprised by a series of V- belts 15 running on pulleys 13, 14, both belts being supported at the working position by members 16, 17 and the upper drums 6, 7 and the member 16 being vertically adjustable to suit sticks of different diameters. The trimming cutters 19 are dovetailed into carriers 18 fitted between the lower belts 15 and the saws 20 are fitted in a central groove in the trimming cutters. Lateral adjustment of the pulleys and the carriers 18 is provided in order that dowels of any desired length may be cut.
