723,654. Gas producers. DEMAG AKT.- GES. Dec. 18, 1951, [Dec. 18, 1950; March 19, 1951.] No. 29685/51. Class 51 (2). In order to prevent the formation of a crust over the bed of fuel in a gas producer using coking bituminous coal, one or more crushing tools are adapted to exert a downward, non- impact crushing pressure on the fuel bed, in such a manner as to follow a curved, e.g. circular, path in a substantially horizontal plane relative 'to the fuel bed. In one embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown) a lever carrying a heavy ball may be attached to an eccentrically mounted fuel feed shoot which revolves with the producer cover, or one or more crushing members 15, Fig. 2, having plough shaped ends 21 engaging the fuel bed may be mounted in the producer cover, the top part 19 of the spindle 16 being screw-threaded to adjust the height of each member. Fig. 3 shows another embodiment in which one or more of the crushing members 15 are associated with a rotatable producer cover 3 conveying an eccentrically mounted fuel shoot 6 and a mechanical poker 10.
