Abstract

A hardenable coating and/or impregnating composition comprises an insect attractant or repellant dispersed in a solution of an aminoplast in an organic solvent, wherein the quantity of insect attractant or repellant is sufficient to exhibit the effect of crystallization or exudation at the surface of the composition when hardened. Aminoplasts specified are etherified, e.g. butylated, urea and/or melamine formaldehyde condensates, which may be plasticized with castor oil, tricresyl phosphate and oil-modified alkyds. The compositions are preferably hardened at low temperatures, e.g. atmospheric temperatures or the temperature of a hot air blast, e.g. 90 DEG C., and this may be effected by the addition of hardeners, e.g. sulphuric, ethyl sulphuric, phosphoric and formic acids. Insect repellants specified are: dimethyl phthalate, 2-ethyl-2-butyl-1 : 3-propane diol, heliotropine, p-methoxy-acetophenone, N-dibutyl aceto-acetamide, pyrethrum, and allethrin; the last two may be used in conjunction with a synergist, e.g. piperonyl butoxide. Attractants specified are isovaleric acid, methyl eugenol and tri-p-nitrophenylthiophosphate, alone or together with insecticides. Examples are given. The compositions are used in the production of protective fabrics and clothing. Specification 709,721 is referred to.
