Abstract

Artificial filaments &c. are produced by extruding viscose into a coagulating bath containing sulphuric acid and zinc sulphate, in the presence of 1/4 -5 and preferably 1-5 millimols. per 100 grams of viscose of a polyalkylene polyamine having at least 3 amino groups which are not directly united to each other and which are primary or secondary amino groups. The polyamine may be added to the viscose or to the coagulating bath and the concentration of zinc sulphate in the latter is preferably 0.5-15 per cent. The polyamines should be soluble in the viscose and the coagulating bath and should therefore contain no hydrocarbon radicals of high molecular weight which confer insolubility and tend to cause retention of the polyamines in the filaments after spinning. Examples of polyamines are diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, pentaethylene hexamine and compounds obtained by condensing them with aliphatic alkylating agents having not more than 4 carbon atoms but more than one alkylating group in the molecule, for example 1,3-dichlorhydrin, dichlorethylene, and trimethylene bromide, e.g. the condensation product of 4 mols. of triethylene tetramine with 3 mols. of 1,3-dichlorhydrin. The process of the invention is preferably used in conjunction with the so-called "hot stretch" process in which the freshly spun filaments are stretched while they are passing through a bath of hot dilute acid as described in Specification 467,500. In an example a viscose containing 7.5 per cent of cellulose, containing 1 millimol. of diethylene triamine per 100 grams, and having a salt point of 6.0 is spun into a coagulating bath containing 9.5 per cent sulphuric acid, 4.0 zinc sulphate and 20 sodium sulphate at 48 DEG C. The filaments thus formed are stretched 65 per cent in a bath at 95 DEG C. made by diluting the spinning bath to three times its volume. The process of the invention increases the thickness of the skin of the filaments and gives them a smooth surface. It also reduces their water imbibition and improves their resistance to laundering when wet. It enables unripened viscoses to be spun. Specifications 652,741, 652,746 and 654,083 also are referred to.
