Abstract
Regenerated cellulose products are produced by extruding viscose into an aqueous sulphuric acid spinning bath containing at least 2 per cent of zinc sulphate and at least 0.2 per cent of an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monoamine containing in the molecule from 4 to 10 carbon atoms and no radical with more than 6 carbon atoms. The bath may contain 2-15 per cent of zinc sulphate and 0.2-0.5 per cent of the monoamine. In addition it may contain 4-12 per cent of sulphuric acid and 13-25 per cent of sodium sulphate, and it may further contain 1-5 per cent of ferrous sulphate, manganese sulphate, magnesium sulphate, nickel sulphate, or chromic sulphate. The products may be passed from the first bath into a second in which they are stretched to an extent of at least 20 per cent. In an example, unripened viscose is spun into yarn by extrusion into baths at 50 DEG C. containing 8.5 per cent sulphuric acid, 23 per cent sodium sulphate, 4 per cent zinc sulphate and 0.0, 0.2 and 0.4 per cent triethylamine respectively, and the filaments are carried through a water bath at 95-100 DEG C. and given an 80 per cent stretch therein. The physical properties of the yarns so produced are compared. Other examples are given in which yarn is produced in a similar manner with the addition of dibutylamine, cyclohexylamine, amylamine or butylmonoethalamine. In addition to the above amines, diethylamine, dipropylamine, butylamine, ethyldiethanolamine, triethanolamine, dipropanolamine, propylpropanolamine, hexanolamine, amyldiethanolamine, butylmethylethanolamine, propylethanolamine and hexyldiethanolamine may be used. The process is stated to improve the wet tenacity, soil resistance and abrasion resistance of the yarn, to impart to it a smooth surface, to reduce its gel swelling factor and to increase its "D value." It is also stated to render it possible to spin high quality yarn from unripened viscose. Specifications 533,309 and 652,741 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,347,883 and 2,347,884 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the addition to the coagulating bath of aromatic monoamines such as aniline, pyridine or piperidine. Cyclohexylethanolamine is also referred to as a suitable amine. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
