Abstract
723,261. Oil-cooling radiators. GARRETT CORPORATION. June 3, 1952. [June 15, 1951] No. 13941/52. Class 64 (3). [Also in Group XXXIV] In an oil-cooling system for an internalcombustion engine, the oil is cooled in a heatexchanger by a primary coolant comprising engine fuel and also by a second coolant e.g. air. The flow of air through the heat-exchanger is controlled by means responsive to the temperature of the oil in the system, located e.g. in a conduit leading cooled oil back to the engine. The oil cooler shown comprises a bundle of tubes 14 extending between tube plates and surrounded by a shell 11 of elliptical crosssection. A group of the tubes communicate at each end with headers 127, 128 secured to the shell for the passage of a volatile liquid fuel through these tubes, the remaining tubes being open for passage of air. The flow of oil through the cooler is controlled by means of a valve block 46 which is connected to inlet and outlet ports of the shell by passages 33, 36 respectively provided exteriorly of the shell. A further exterior passage 39 and a cross-over passage 44 are provided. Connections 49, 54 in the block serve to direct oil from the engine to the cooler and from the cooler to the engine respectively. The arrangement in the valve block 46 is such that on starting, when the oil in the system is cold, oil from the engine is passed from the inlet connection 49 and through the block to the outlet connection 54 and back to the engine thus by-passing the cooler. After a further period when the oil has warmed somewhat, it is directed from the valve block to the passage 33 and due to the still high pressure prevailing in the cooler the oil, taking the path of least ressitance, flows thence through the cross-over passage 44 and through the passage 39 leading back to the valve block and thence through the connection 54 to the engine. The oil flowing through passages 33, 44, 39 serves to warm-up the cooler and eventually as normal running conditions prevail a thermally-operated valve in the block closes the passage 39 and the oil flowing through the passage 33 enters the shell inlet port 32 (Fig. 3) and flows over the tubes to the shell outlet 35 and thence to passage 36 leading to the block 46 from which it flows through connection 54 to the engine. The cooler is located in an air passage the outlet from which is controlled by a shutter or flap Fig. 5 (not shown) which is actuated by electrical means actuated by means responsive to the temperature of the oil leaving the cooler. Specification 586,031 is referred to.
