Abstract
460,047. Radiators for aircraft and motor vehicles. BROWN, C. A. Aug. 13, 1935, No. 22811. [Class 29] An oil &c. cooler comprises honeycomb type cooling units connected in series and having at least two byepass valves, controlled automatically either by pressure or temperature or both, and so that the valve associated with the unit through which the oil enters the cooler is the first to open. An air-cooled oil cooler comprises units 1, 2 through which the oil and air pass in counterflow, and which are provided with spring-loaded byepass valves 26, 30, the valve 26 through which the oil enters the unit being loaded to open at a pressure higher than the valve 30. The oil enters the duct 8 of the unit 1 and passes through the port 9 and the sections of the unit to the duct 20 which is connected to the next unit. In a modification, the byepassed oil flows through annular passages around the cooling sections of the units. Fig. 6 shows another arrangement comprising three units secured together by bolts 58 and each provided with a casting having an oil inlet 61, Fig. 8, communicating directly with the unit through a port 62, a byepass valve chamber 63 connected inside the unit with the port 62 and directly with an outlet 68 connected to the next unit. The cooled oil from the first unit passes through a port 71 to the outlet 68. The byepass valves of the units are set to open at successively higher pressures from left to right. In cooling liquids such as water, the valves are controlled thermostatically and may operate shutters controlling the air flow through the cooler. Further, the spring-loading of the valves may be varied thermostatically. Specifications 166,930, 219,788, [both in Class 64 (iii)], and 232,309, [Class 29], are referred-to.
