[Also in Group X] A gate for fixing across window or door frames to prevent children straying comprises two members 1, 2, coupled side by side to from a barrier and relatively movable laterally for widening or narrowing the width thereof, adjustable means for forcing the members 1, 2 outwardly with respect to one another and frame-engaging means 15 carried by the members. As shown the grille-like members. 1, 2, are in the same plane the member 1 having at its top and bottom edges two bars 3, 4 which are received in corresponding bores of the upper and lower cross members 5, 6, of the member 2. Link couplings 7, 8 are arranged at the top and bottom of the members 1, 2, each pair being pivoted to an end of an inner portion 9 or outer portion 10 of a strainer arm the former being slidable within the latter. A screw threaded sleeve 11 which is rotatable by handles 12 is carried by the screw threaded inner portion 9 and abuts against the outer portion 10, the adjacent ends of the sleeve 11 and portion 10 having a rectangular cross-section over which a similarly cross-sectioned clamp 13 may be positioned to prevent rotation. The frame engaging means 15 may be resilient contact pads or in a modification may positively engage with co-operating means of the fixed frame such as grooves or tenons. The members 1, 2 may be hollow plate-like members, solid plate-like members or wire netting and they may be arranged in adjacent parallel planes to allow them to overlap.
