Abstract
Vinyl aromatic compounds, e.g. styrene, methyl styrene and vinyl naphthalene, are polymerized with drying oils, e.g. castor oil, stand oil, isomerized linseed oil and wood oil, or with the condensation products of the oils or their acids with dibasic carboxylic acids, e.g. phthalic acid, and polyhydric alcohols, e.g. glycerol and pentaerythritol, in the presence of an alkyl benzene having at least 8 carbon atoms in the side chain, e.g. undecylbenzene. The drying oil may be dissolved in the alkylbenzene and mixed with 1/2 to an equal amount of the vinyl aromatic compound, which may be added gradually during the polymerization which is effected at 140 DEG to 200 DEG C., preferably in the absence of accelerators.
