Abstract
A composition for dyeing or tinting hair on the scalp in the cold, with or without simultaneous waving, comprises an aqueous solution containing a water-soluble acid coal-tar dye which is dermatologically safe for use on the scalp, and a mercaptan, the solution having a pH of 7 to 11. Suitable mercaptans include ammonium thioglycollate, triethanolamine thioglycollate, thioglycerol and salts of thiolactic acid. Specified dyestuffs are Orange I, Tartrazine and Resorcin Brown. A setting lotion containing oxidizing agents inert to the dye, such as hydrogen peroxide, ammonium persulphate and potassium bromate, may be applied to set the wave. A thickening agent, e.g. methyl cellulose, and/or a wetting agent may also be incorporated in the composition. An example describes a solution comprising by weight 5.0 per cent of thioglycollic acid, 7.0 per cent (or enough to produce a pH of 9.2) of ammonia solution (sp. gr. 0.88) and 0.3 per cent of Orange I. Specifications 589,956 and 632,342 are referred to.
