Abstract

Oil is removed from oil-contaminated clay by feeding the clay continuously into a reaction zone into which air is continuously injected at a rate sufficient to allow a portion of the oil to burn and provide the heat necessary to vaporize the reremainder, the air and vaporized oil maintaining the clay as a fluidized bed. The oil vapours and combustion products are continuously removed from the top of the reaction zone. The clay treated may be spent clay from the refining of lubricating oil. The temperature in the reaction zone may be 800-1100 DEG F. The oil vapours may be condensed and a portion of the oil mixed with the clay feed; the remainder may be recovered as gasoline and fuel oil. Specification 721,681 is referred to.
