A lathe comprises a bridge-piece supported by two side columns, the downwardly directed part of the bridge carrying a tailstock and provided with a longitudinal guide running parallel to the spindle axis and serving to suspend and guide a carriage supporting the cutting tool above the work, the bridge-piece also supporting a spindle casing for the spindle on its underside. The lathe frame comprises a bed plate 1, Fig. 2, uprights 3, 4 and a bridgepiece 2. The underside of the bridge-piece slopes backwardly at about 30 degrees to the horizontal plane and carries longitudinal guideways 12, 13, Fig. 1, for a suspended saddle 14. A cross-slide 15 on the saddle carries a tool 18 which operates in an inverted position on the work 7. The cuttings are directed downwardly into a clear space below the machine and the turning operation may be observed through a window in front of the machine. A lever tool-rest 19 for transverse cutting and carrying one or more tools 21 may be arranged in the bed 1 and feed of the tools is effected hydraulically. The weight of the saddle is balanced by springs arranged against the guideways. The lathe may be adapted for copying operations in which case a pattern 23, Fig. 1, is supported on adjustable supports 22 provided on the-bridge-piece 2, a feeler 24 carried by the saddle sliding along the pattern and copying its form by means not described. Headstocks; tailstock.-The headstock 28, Fig. 3, is suspended in a U-recess in the upright 3 and is secured to a U-bracket 60 which embraces the saddle and is in turn secured to the bridge-piece. This enables the saddle to be moved past the headstock. A pair of guideways 54 is located with a small clearance below the headstock casing and, to facilitate removal, the headstock when unbolted is lowered on to these guideways and can be slid out of the frame. The tailstock is slidable on the carriage guideways and is similarly located in the withdrawn position in a U-recess of the upright 4.
