Abstract

The surfaces of solid particles are coated with a straight chain fatty acid having 12 or more carbon atoms in the molecule or with the product of interaction of such acid with the substance of the particles, by mixing intimately with the solid in dust or powder form or in the form of an aqueous paste or slurry of such particles a solution of an ammonium or volatile amine salt of the acid and drying the product at such a temperature as to decompose the ammonium or amine salt. Specified substances which may be treated in this manner are barytes, china clay, slate dust, talc, silica, carbon black, whiting, limestone, precipitated calcium carbonate and zinc oxide; specified fatty acids are stearic, oleic and ricinoleic acids; morpholine is referred to as a suitable volatile amine. When the solid is formed by precipitation, the salt of the fatty acid may be mixed therewith after precipitation and before drying. In general, the weight of amine or ammonium salt to be added will be between 0.05 and 5 per cent. by weight of the weight of solid particles. A suitable range of drying temperature is 80-150 DEG C. and, in the example, a temperature of 110-130 DEG C. is used to decompose ammonium stearate covering particles of whiting. The dried product may be disintegrated if necessary to give coated particles having substantially the same size as the original particles.
