Abstract
720,980. Actuation of switches. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 3, 1953 [June 19, 1952], No. 15285/53. Class 38 (5) A switch actuated by fluid pressure comprises a casing 28, 33 divided into two chambers by a diaphragm 29 to one side of which fluid is admitted through a pipe 25. A fixed annular contact 30 is clamped between the diaphragm and casing, and a movable cupshaped contact 40 is pressed into engagement with the contact 30 by a spring 41 when a low pressure exists in the chamber 27. Electrical connection is made between the contact 40 and a terminal 22 by the spring 41 and a metal washer 45. When the pressure in the chamber 27 increases sufficiently it moves the diaphragm and opens the contacts 40, 30. In order to limit the movement of the diaphragm the contact 40 is formed with a shoulder 44 which engages the rim of a fixed insulating cup 48 when the contacts are opened. A second insulating cup 47 is connected to the cup 48 by ribs and both cups are provided with openings 61, 62 to ensure atmospheric pressure in the casing 33. The switch may be used to indicate high and low pressure in a lubricating oil system connected to the pipe 25, the circuit through the switch comprising a battery 60 and lamp 21.
