720,321. Fluid-pressure servomotor control systems. BISHOP, R., JOHNSTON, R. H., WHITLOCK, G. B. R., and JOHNSTON, K. J. R. May 18, 1953 [May 16, 1952], No. 12493/52. Class 135. A power-assisted rack and pinion steering gear for vehicles utilizes the reaction between the rack and pinion to operate a valve controlling a servomotor operatively connected to the rack. Lateral displacement of the pinion 8 due to its reaction with the rack 6 causes movement of a block 10 against either of a pair of centring springs 20, 21, such movement being transmitted by a link 26, 27 to a lever 31 pivoted at 32 and operatively connected to a piston valve 37. The valve 37 controls admission of pressure fluid to, or exhaust of fluid from, . ports 46, 48 at either end of a servo-cylinder 47, the piston 52 of which is rigidly connected to the rack to provide a followup action for recentring the valve.
