Abstract

669,101. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. VENNING & CO., Ltd., J. March 29, 1950 [March 30, 1949], No. 8660/49. Class 135. A servo-assisted vehicle steering gear comprises a hydraulic servomotor 9 connected to an arm 8 for actuating the steerable road wheels, a manually-actuated drop arm 2 connected, through lost motion taken up by springs 50, 51, to a drag link 5 also connected to the arm 8, and switches, e.g. a double micro-switch, associated with the drop arm so that either of solenoids 41, 42 is energised when one of the springs 50, 51 is compressed, the solenoids actuating valves 23, 24 controlling the passage of pressure liquid from a pump 35 through a conduit 34 and passages 29, 31 to the servomotor. The valves are spring-urged to the position shown, in which both ends of the servomotor are in communication through a conduit 37 with a reserve tank 20 to permit direct manual steering. In a modification, a ball joint, by which the drop arm is connected to the drag link, is sufficiently offset to cause torsional strain of the arm under steering loads, and this strain is utilized to operate the micro-switch.
