[Also in Group XXXVIII] A method of testing thin sheet material by transmitting ultrasonic waves into the material at a small angle to the surface (see Group. XXXVIII) uses a liquid filled coupling means for materials such as copper where the usual solid couplers require an angle of incidence of the same order as the angle of refraction. The container 7 is provided with a spindle 8 which is rotatable in bushes 9 and one end of which projects through the side of the container and carries a pointer 10 which may co-operate with a scale, marked in degrees, on a circular plate 11. The pointer may also serve as a finger piece for turning the spindle 8. An insulated holder 12 secured to spindle 8 carries a piezo-electric crystal 13. Conductors (not shown) for the crystal 13 pass through an opening 14 provided with a screw-cap 15. A plug 16 is screwed into a hole through which the container 7 may be filled with a suitable liquid such as glycerine or oil. Using glycerine, and when the material to be tested is copper, an angle of refraction of 82 degrees is obtained with an angle of incidence of about 58 degrees.
