Abstract
615,684. Supersonic inspection apparatus. SPERRY PRODUCTS, Inc. June 26, 1946, No. 19099. Convention date, June 28, 1945. [Class 118 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIX] Apparatus for inspecting the interior of a solid body comprises means for placing a liquid in contact with a surface of the body, means for transmitting a supersonic wave through the liquid at an angle of incidence with said surface sufficiently different from zero to avoid standing waves, and means for detecting waves emerging from said surface into the liquid. As shown, an X-cut crystal 10 secured to an insulating block 12 is inclined to the face 16 of the body 15 to be tested, and separated therefrom, the block being pivoted on a pin 20 and pulled by a spring 22 against an adjusting-screw 26. The crystal is mounted near the open end of a container 25 in a chamber defined by the body 15 and a' partition 23, and this chamber is filled with mercury or other liquid by means, for example, of a collapsable reservoir 35 attached to the container. By adjusting the inclination of the crystal and moving the container, inspection of parts of inaccessible bodies is facilitated. If desired, the inclination may be such that the longitudinal waves 41 do not penetrate the body and all of the refracted energy lies in the shear waves 42. The front and rear faces of the crystal may be curved to provide greater sensitivity in particular areas within the body 15. In a modification, two transducers, an emitter and a receiver are arranged in a tank filled with liquid through which a solid body to be tested is passed. The body is guided by rollers, and the crystals are mounted one at each side of the tank. Specification 571,817 is referred to.
