Abstract

719,308. Natural bone substitutes. BALOG. L. July 23, 1952 [July 23, 1951], No. 17377/51. Class 81(2) An artificial femoral or humeral head comprises a domed head with a depending annular metal skirt and a metal shaft for securing to a bone, the recess between the shaft and the skirt being provided with an inlay of non-metallic material. In one form of the invention, Fig. 1, the shaft 2 is integral with the dome 1, a recess between them containing a non-metallic inlay 4. The shaft 2 is straight curved or inclined to the axis of the dome 1 and is triangular in cross-section. In another form of the invention, Fig. 4, the shaft 14 is connected with the metal skirt 16 by a metal diaphragm 15 having holes 19. The dome 12 is made of non-metallic material which is bonded to the inlay 17. disposed between the shaft 14 and the skirt 16 by means of the holes 19. The metal parts are chrome-cobalt molybdenum alloy or stainless steel and the non-metal parts are prepolymerized or self-cured resins e.g. acrylic resins, polyethylene and nylon.
