Abstract

Artificial components for replacement of shoulder joints i.e. collar bones and clavicles involve complementary profiles with partial spherical and hollow cylindrical forms. The components are of physiologically inert material, e.g. a 'stainless' alloy pref. with a ceramic coating such as Cr or Al oxide, or of plastics, specifically high density polyethylene. Opt. the graft surfaces of the components present a matt or porous texture to provide a key for anchorage by adhesives based on e.g. methyl methacrylate.
