Abstract
718,698. Gas turbine plant. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. March 17, 1952 [March 19, 1951], No. 6581/51. Class 110(3) [Also in Group XII] In a combustion apparatus burning a mixture of fuel and air which is a weak mixture of low calorific value, for example, combustion apparatus of a gas turbine plant, the combustion chamber 7 comprises a flame tube. 15, 16 having a burner 17 for burning auxiliary fuel to form a pilot flame, a portion of the fuel and air mixture being admitted at the inlet end of the flame tube for ignition by the pilot flame. Further portions of the mixture are admitted through inlets along the length of the flame tube. The inlets are so spaced and proportioned that the mixture admitted through one is completely burned in the space between that inlet and the succeeding one, the temperature decreasing only gradually along the combustion space. An additional quantity of the mixture may be admitted as a coolant at a point 21 where the temperature is too low to cause ignition of the additional quantity. The combustion chamber comprises an outer cylindrical casing 14 and the flame tube is annular being formed by the cylindrical walls 15, 16 which are perforated at 15a ... 15n along the length. The fuel and air mixture may be mixture of methane and air containing say “ per cent methane, and is compressed in a compressor 3 and heated in a heat exchanger 5 before admission to the combustion chamber 7. The fuel may be the gas resulting from the underground gasification of coal. The auxiliary fuel may be liquid, gaseous or pulverized coal. Specification 693,616 is referred to.
