Abstract
In a process in which a stream of gas flows in the same direction as or the opposite direction <PICT:0718415/IV(c)/1> from a travelling material, the flow velocity is increased in the processing zone so that the Reynolds number exceeds the critical value. The duct 2, through which the material is passed is arranged to increase in cross-section so that the gas or vapour slows as it passes along the duct. It is then passed through a fan 3 and over heaters 8 to a chamber 10, the degree of heating being controlled by flaps 7, 7a. By operation of the flap 11, the gas or vapour may be diverted along duct 12 and through nozzles 13 to cause turbulence in the main duct 2. Increased turbulence may be induced by the use of steel wires 14 and exhausting devices 15. The gas or vapour may leave through duct 18 and fresh gas or vapour drawn in through fan entry 16. The chamber 1 is filled with leakage gases from the apparatus which together with thermal insulation in the walls reduces heat losses to the atmosphere. A series of treatment apparatus may be used, any one of which may be withdrawn from the process. In a modification, (Fig. 2 not shown) the walls of the processing zone may be parallel.
