Class 120(1) A sliver lapping machine of the. type in which the sliver roll is formed between driving cylinders and a movable press cylinder, sliver feeding means can be declutched on completion of a roll, and vertically - movable racks are adapted to move the roll upwards on completion, is characterized in that the clutch members are engaged and disengaged by an electromagnet and an electric motor is used to impart up-anddown movement to the racks. As shown, Fig. 1, slivers 1 fed by take-up rollers 2 pass as a sheet between fluted drawing rollers 3, 4 to be wound into a roll 5 on a core held between the flanges 8 each revolvably carried by a rack 9, Fig. 4. The roll is formed between driven winding rollers 6 and a press roller 7 carried by two further racks 10 which are geared to racks 9. A motor 16 drives rollers 6 and, through a clutch, rollers 2, 3 and 4. A reversible motor 19 drives the racks. During roll formation, motor 19 is not energized and the racks are free to rise. When the roll has reached the desired size, suitably positioned projections on two toothed wheels geared to rollers and 4 engage each other and cause one of the wheels to shift so as to close two switches; the first switch energizes an electromagnet to disengage the clutch in the drive to rollers 2-4, thus stopping sliver delivery and breaking the sliver sheet; the second switch starts motor 19 in a direction to cause racks 9 and 10 to rise, gearing between the racks causing racks 10 to rise more than racks 9 so that roll 5 becomes spaced from both rollers 6 and 7. Engagement of a crank 66, carried by a rack 9, with a fixed stop 67 causes the crank to rotate so as to retract one flange 8; also, a rod 80, Fig. 6, pivoted at 72 and slidably connected to a rack 10, is rocked by the upwardly moving rack so as to release a weighted arm 76 from a hook 77 to cause an ejector 73 to urge the roll 5 into a storing chamber 71, while an empty core 70 from a magazine 69 is released by arms 74, 75 to roll down on to rollers 6. At the end of the upward movement of the racks a stop 12 on an arm 11 carried bv a rack 10 operates switches 13, 14 to stop motor 19 and then start it in the reverse direction so as to lower the racks. Downward rack movement restores ejector 73 and the coreloading means to their inoperative position and causes crank 66 to be moved by engagement with a lever 68 to engage flanges 8 with the empty core 70. When the racks are at the end of their downward movement, a further stop 12 on arm 11 engages a switch 15 to stop motor 19 and de-energize the electromagnet; the drive to rollers 2-4 is thereby re-clutched to start a new winding operation. Manual controls are provided for causing the racks to move in either direction if required.
