Abstract

b -mercaptoethylamine, or bisethylamine disulphide, or salts thereof, or mixtures of these substances are used for the protection of living organisms against the injurious effects of ionizing radiations containing a - and b -particles, g -rays, x-rays, and neutrons. Thus, an injectable solution comprises b -mercaptoethylamine and a salt thereof dissolved in a solvent, e.g. water or propyleneglycol in proportions yielding a pH of 6-8, the weight of the two solids being 2-20 per cent that of the solution. The propylene glycol solution, for intra-muscular injection, may contain a local anaesthetic, e.g. benzocaine. The solutions, which may also contain antibiotics, e.g. aureomycin and dihydrostreptomycin and haemostatics, e.g. semicarbazone of adrenochrome, may be supplied in ampoules containing a gas inert towards the solution. Otherwise, the solid substances may be put up in soluble capsules, pastilles, suppositories &c. or, for external application, may be made up with an excepient, e.g. based on polyethyleneglycol.
