Classes 99 (1) and 99 (2) .[Also in Groups X and XVII] A hollow wooden body or container has a cylindrical wall built up of plural cylindrical segments adhesively or mechanically interconnected as a unit, and is externally or internally threaded at one or both ends to receive a correspondingly threaded fitting; the interengaged threads being coated with an adhesive or non- adhesive jointing compound. Figs. 1 and 4 show a hollow cylinder 10 built up from three arcuate cylindrical wooden segments 21 extending the whole length of the cylinder and interconnected by scarf joints 22 with suitable adhesive jointing; one end being internally threaded at 12 to receive a wooden screw-in plug 13, and the other end being externally threaded at 18 to receive a wooden screw-on cap 15. The cylinder may be built of segments which are connected by dowels or metal connectors let into the wood, or by screwing two adjoining segments to a further segment overlapping the joint (Figs. 5, 6, 7, not shown) or may be of 3-ply construction (Fig. 8) wherein three cylindrical segmental shells 29, 30, 31 having staggered butt joints 23 are fitted one within the other and bonded together to a single unit by the use of an adhesive. Adjacent cylinders may be coupled by interior threads engaging an externally threaded coupling, or by interacting internal and external threads or by internally threaded wooden flanges engaging external threads on the cylinders (Figs. 9, 10, 11, not shown). The coupling threads may be coated with resin, oil, wax, bitumen, or hot or cold setting synthetic resin adhesives to make fluid tight joints, and the cylinder surfaces may be impregnated to resist liquid absorption. Cylindrical bodies according to the invention may be utilised as load bearing columns, pipe sections ancl mandrels for winding width materials as well as containers.
