Abstract

A lubricating grease composition contains a lubricating oil thickened to a grease consistency with a silica oleogel. The silica gel is obtained by precipitation from sodium silicate with a quantity of acid that holds the pH value of the mixture at about 5. replacing the water in the gel with a solvent such as an ether, a water-soluble alcohol or a ketone such as acetone, and then replacing the solvent by lubricating oil. Lubricating oils specified are mineral oils or synthetic oils such as the esters of dibasic acids, silicone oils, and complex esters formed from a combination of mono- and di-functional acids and alcohols, polyglycols or glycol-ethers. The gel may be water-proofed by incorporating into the grease an oil-soluble resin, for example a modified alkyl resin such as the resins formed by condensation of glycols or glycerol with phthalic anhydride modified with 2-5 per cent of linseed oil, the unsaturated acids of linseed oil or oleic acid.
