Abstract
714,270. Cleaning containers. TOBIN, A. J. Sept. 26, 1952 [Nov. 21, 1951], No. 27295/51. Class 138 (1) . Apparatus for cleaning hollow cylindrical shaped containers comprises a turn-table 1 for supporting a container, and a brush or like cleaning device 8 suspended from a slidably mounted carriage 15 and adapted to be driven by an electric motor 14 so as to be rotated in contact with the inner surface of the container, the carriage being operatively connected with a crank member driven by a second electric motor 7 which also drives the table, whereby the table may be rotated and the brush may be simultaneously rotated and reciprocated. The turntable 1, which has three or more pins 2 adjustably arranged in radial slots in order to secure containers of different diameters to the table, is rotated about its vertical axis bv a shaft 3 from the electric motor 7 through sprockets 5, 6 and chain 4. The brush 8 is detachably mounted by a holder 10 on a shaft 9 rotatable by the electric motor 14 mounted on the carriage 15. Brushes of different diameters may then be fitted to the shaft 9. The carriage 15 is reciprocated vertically on a fixed rod 17 by means of a cable 18, connected at one end to the carriage, passing over a pulley 19 and connected at its other end to a member 20 on the periphery of a wheel 21. The wheel 21 and member 20 constitute a crank rotated by the shaft 3 through sprocket 26, chain 24, sprocket 25 and bevel gears 23, 22. The turntable and brush are arranged to be rotated in opposite directions. As shown in Fig. 2, the carriage 15 is resiliently mounted for movement in a horizontal plane in order to ensure good contact between the brush and interior surface of a container as by an arm 27 spring-loaded at 30 and having at one end a roller 29 which can ride up and down in a fixed bar 28. The arm 27 is telescopically adjustable so that the tension of the spring may be varied to suit different sizes of containers.
