Class 46 An appropriate degree of vacuum in a liquid receiver keeps closed an outlet from the receiver and draws liquid through a filter pad into the receiver, the vacuum being broken down at intervals, thus permitting discharge of the liquid through the outlet, and the filter pads with retained sediment being removed and replaced by unused pads at intervals. Liquid supplied to a funnel 10, Fig. 2, passes through a filter pad held between the lower end of the funnel and a perforate member 9, filtrate being drawn into a vessel 1 by vacuum applied at 13, the vacuum also holding closed a releaser flap valve 2 for discharge of liquid. Where the vacuum source operates continuously, the vacuum in the vessel 1 is relieved by cessation of flow through the member 9 and subsequent passage therethrough of air. Valve 2 is thus automatically released and discharge of liquid occurs through opening 4. Alternatively, liquid will discharge upon removal of the pad and consequent inrush of air, the vacuum being reinstated by substituting a fresh pad. Where pulsating vacuum is applied, liquid discharge occurs during admission of air from the pulsator. The pad is removed after lifting the funnel 10 in the sleeve 12, insertion of a fresh pad being facilitated by an aperture 12a and guides 6b. Alternatively, the funnel and sleeve may constitute a single unit hinged to the lid 6. The pad may be of the type disclosed in Specification 580,162, [Group XX].
