713,471. Coal distillation apparatus; vertical retort furnaces. SOC. DE TECHNIQUE INDUSTRIELLE. Dec. 21, 1951 [Dec. 22, 1950; Dec. 15, 1951], No. 30046/51. Classes 51 (2) and 55 (1) A coal distillation apparatus consists of a retort 1 made of sheet metal and of zig-zag shape which is positioned vertically in a heating chamber 4 having an inlet 5 and outlet 6 for heating gas. In operation, the retort is heated to 800‹ to 1,000‹ C. whilst coal of 4 to 5 mm. size is admitted to the top through valve 8 and flows in the form of a film down over the inclined surfaces, rebounding from one surface to the next through the hot atmosphere in the retort. Semi-coke and distillation gases are withdrawn at 10 and 11 respectively. Fig. 2 shows a setting of zig-zag retorts 43 which are heated by gases from a burner 47. The retorts are charged with coal from a hopper 41 and the semi-coke formed is collected in a chamber 44, from which it is extracted by a worm conveyer 45. Distillation gases are withdrawn at 46. The heating gases leave the setting through a duct 48 and pass into a recuperator 49 in which the air for burner 47 is preheated.
