Abstract

786,500. Porous compositions. SOUTHERN LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE CORPORATION. Nov. 4, 1954 [July 20, 1954], No. 31902/54. Class 70. [Also in Groups XI and XII] A lightweight aggregate is prepared by passing the raw material, e.g., clay, shale, or argillaceous or non-argillaceous slate, downwardly through a rotating inclined kiln to be heated by combustion products prior to exposure near the lower end of the kiln to a short concentrated flame from burner apparatus, to cause it to expand, and passing a substantially restricted flow of secondary air over the material discharging from the kiln to prevent agglomeration of the particles of the aggregate and to produce a reducing atmosphere within the kiln. Apparatus for carrying the process into effect may comprise an inclined rotating cylindrical kiln 10, (see Group XII), heated by a pair of burners 30, 31 (see Group XI), adapted to produce a short high temperature flame within the lower end of the kiln, the combustion gases from which pass through the kiln to a stack 12. Crushed raw material is fed via a shoot 19 into the upper end of the kiln 10 to be heated to about 600‹ to 1200‹F. in a first zone extending for about 25 per cent of the length of the kiln, and to about 1700‹ to 1900‹F. in a second zone extending for about two thirds of the kiln length. The material then passes into the intense heating zone of the burners 30, 31 to be heated quickly to about 2200‹ to 2250‹F. and thereby expanded, and at the outlet end of the kiln it is cooled by the incoming combustion air and is discharged by a shoot 41. The burners 30, 31 are supplied with pulverulent coal and the ash thereof is stated to be incorporated in the outer layers of the aggregate particles and to assist in preventing agglomeration of the latter. Secondary air enters the lower end of the kiln and its flow is restricted by individually pivoted slats 92 suspended beneath a platform 40 so as to be displaceable by the material discharging through the shoot 41.
