Abstract
The corrosiveness towards metals, particularly nickel, or iron used in distillation &c. equipment of liquid titanium chloride contaminated with aluminium chloride is reduced by mixing the liquid with water not substantially exceeding one mole. per mole. aluminium chloride present as AlCl3, whereafter the titanium chloride is removed by distillation from the water-aluminium chloride complex. A lower limit of one mole. water per three moles. aluminium chloride is specified. Removal of colouring-imparting impurities, e.g. VOCl3, is effected by further distillation over copper. The contaminated titanium tetrachloride treated is such as obtained by the chlorination under reducing conditions, of titanium ore or slag, e.g. as in Specifications 533,378, 535,179 and 553,056.
