711,773. Generating combustion products under pressure. CLARKSON THIMBLE TUBE BOILER CO., Ltd. March 16, 1951 [March 17, 1950], No. 6757/50. Class 51 (1). [Also in Group XIII] Part of the oxygen-containing gases discharged from an internal combustion engine, other than a Diesel engine of the kind defined in Specification 654,920, [Group XIII], flows through a combustion chamber at relatively low velocity, and is heated by the combustion therein of fuel supplied to the chamber, the heated part of the gases being utilized in a water heater and/or steam boiler. In the form shown, the combustion chamber 1 is mounted in an L-shaped part 3 of a Diesel engine exhaust pipe, and is formed by a refractory cylindrical wall 31 fitted in a sheet metal cylinder 27 welded to a removable plate 21 which carries an oil or gas burner 57 and an igniter 59. Ports 39a for the entry of part of the exhaust gases into the combustion chamber are controlled by a longitudinally slidable strip 47 having elongated holes 43 which taper in one direction. The Provisional Specification states that the wall 31 has one or more internal projections which become incandescent, and describes a modification in which the combustion chamber is outside and parallel to part of the exhaust gas duct, and is connected to it by branches. Valves may be provided at the inlet and outlet.
