Class 146(1) In a suspension filing system in which index strips 4, or cards, are arranged between suspended filing cards 8, one or more lifting devices for the index strips or cards are provided on the floor of the cabinet and consist of a horizontal lifting rod 1 with articulated arms 13 which can be brought from the oblique position into a vertical or approximately vertical position, to raise the strips 4, by means of a tie rod 15 and hand lever 18 articulated thereto. Each series of index strips 4 is connected to its lifting rod 1 by means of a connecting plate 2 having an enlarged, head. 3 which fits into a correspondingly shaped slot in the strips 4. The lifting rod 1 is provided with end rollers 9 which are guided between pairs of strips 12 on the end walls 10, 11 of the cabinet and the arms 13 have rollers 14 to facilitate movement of the device. The tie rod 15 is hinged to the lever 18 either by a pin and slot connection or, as shown, by an intermediate rod 19 passing through a aperture 16 in the front wall 10, the lever 18 being hinged at 17 to a bracket 24 extending out from wall 10. To allow an additional rise of rod 1, or shorter arms 13, ramps with a flat top may be provided, in front of each roller 14, the tie rod 15 then being connected to lever 18 by pin and slot and the aperture 16 being enlarged to allow the raising of the tie rod 15. To prevent the cards 8 from being inadvertently raised with the index strips 4, rails 6 are hinged at 5 to the side walls of the cabinet, so as to lie over the suspension tabs 7 of the cards 8. In the final raised position of the lifting device the arms 13 pass a few degrees over the vertical so as to maintain the index strips 4 in the raised position.
