Abstract
710,857. Gas turbine plant. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Dec.. 17, 1951 [Nov. 1, 1950], No. 26704/50, Class 110(3) [Also in Group XXVII] In a by-pass compound gas turbine engine comprising drive means operative during starting to drive both the high and low pressure engine rotors and including a drive shaft to transmit power from an external source to the rotor there is provided a declutching means. such as oneway clutch 32a. 32b, to permit rotors to rotate independently during normal engine operation. In order to prevent the exhaust gases from the multi-stage axial-flow turbine unit flowing back through the by-pass to the inlet of the high-pressure axial compressor 14a during starting, the by-pass is pressurized by connecting the low-pressure axial compressor 10a to compressor 14a. A shaft 21 that joins the low-pressure compressor 10a and its turbine is housed inside the shaft 20 through which the high pressure compressor 14a and turbine are coupled; the drive between the compressors is taken through a sleeve 24 on shaft 20 gears 25, 26, lay-shaft 27, gears 29, 38, lay-shaft 39, gears 41, 33, sleeve member 31, clutch 32a, 32b. gears 35, 36 and a sleeve 37 on shaft 21. The starting motor, which may be an electric motor or an air or gas operated turbine is coupled to either of sleeves 24 or 37 through means not shown which may include a free-wheel or disengageable clutch to enable the engine to overrun the starter motor when the former becomes self-operative; such a device could include a centrifugally actuated pawl. The drive means from the starting motor is arranged between shafts 20, 21 and a wall 11a in an annular duct which opens into both the coaxial by-pass and the intake to compressor 14b. In a modification, the drive from the starting motor to the low-pressure rotor assembly is effected through bevel gears and a spur gear on a lay-shaft while a free-wheel device is provided between the high and low pressure rotor assemblies.
