Abstract
709,266. Thermionic cathode tubes. POSTMASTER GENERAL. Oct. 17, 1951 [Feb. 9, 1950], No. 3366/50. Class 39(1) An ionization gauge is provided with a shield 6 arranged between an electron collector 4 and an ion collector 5 and maintained at a negative potential sufficient to suppress substantially the emission of electrons from the ion collector during operation of the gauge. The shield 6 is preferably in the form of a cylinder closed at one end by a member 7 provided with a slit 8 having a width of the same order as the distance between the shield 6 and the thermionic cathode 2. The anode 4 may be at a potential of 100 to 200 volts, the ion collector at a negative potential of about 2 volts, and the shield 6 at a negative potential of about 40 volts relative to the cathode. The surface of the ion collector is preferably blackened to prevent reflection of radiation on to the inner surface of the shield 6. The electrodes are enclosed in a glass envelope provided with side tube 3 for connection with the source of low pressures to be measured.
