Abstract
709,149. Reciprocatory filing. MERCER, A. C. Feb. 14, 1952, No. 3923/52. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIII] A portable pneumatic tool comprises two single-acting pistons 29, 30 which are coupled to move in opposite directions and one of which carries a saw, file, abrading tool &c. 39, each piston being arranged to close an exhaust port 27a or 28a during its exhaust stroke so as to trap and compress a portion of the exhaust air. The trapped air assists in reversing the piston and prevents contact of the piston with the cylinder end. In the sawing-machine illustrated, each piston controls ports such as 23a, 22a. The pressure air passes through a lubricating chamber 14 to a piston valve 20. At the end of its stroke, the piston 29 uncovers the port 22a and causes the valve 20 to be moved to the right. Air then passes through the passage 28 and is exhausted through the port 27a and a passage 46. The exhaust air continues down a passage 47 to clear swarf from the saw 39 which is pivotally mounted to the piston 30. The saw is supported by a member 44 and is protected by a guard 45. The pistons and their associated parts are balanced as by making the piston 29 of steel and the piston 30 of aluminium.
