Abstract

255,519. Alcock, J. F. April 21, 1925. Percussive tools. - A two - stroke internalcombustion engine piston D and a free hammer piston F move oppositely in a working cylinder C, with inlet and exhaust ports C2, C<3>. The hammer piston F is returned by compressed air or gas from the space C<6>, conveyed to the front of the tool by a passage H, whilst the charge entering at C<5> is compressed in the crank case and transferred to the cylinder by way of a pipe C<4>. The pressure in the space C<6> is maintained in accordance with that of the charge by means of a pipe J<1> and a non-return valve J, mounted so as to be reversible for the purpose of retaining the tup in its forward position. The exhaust escaping at K<1> is used to draw air through a cover K<2> over the cooling ribs K. In a modified arrangement the space C<6> communicates with the space H through inlet and outlet valves P, P<1>, either of which is connected with the space H. the other being put to atmosphere through the space Q<5>, by means of a hand-operated chauge-over valve Q. A relief valve S is also provided.
