Abstract

707,879. Typewriters &c. SMITH & SON, Ltd., W. H. Dec. 6, 1951 [Sept. 6, 1950], No. 22002/50. Class 100 (4) Paper feeds.-A continuous stationery feed apparatus for use in tabulators, typewriters or like machines having a driven rotatable platen 17, comprises two parallel shafts 11, 12 carrying pinwheels 13 to feed original and copy webs, the shaft 11 being driven from the tabulator &c. to feed the original web and the other shaft 12 being driven by an independent drive from the tabulator &c. to feed the copy web a limited amount after each printing operation. The two shafts 11, 12 are journalled in side plates 9, 10 adjustably secured to the machine frame 14 by ecentrics 16 and clips 15. The shaft 11 is driven by a gear 21 and an idler gear 20 loose on shaft 12 from a gear 18 on the platen shaft 19. The shaft extends through the plate 9 to a gear 52 which through a gear 53 rotates a gear 54. Adjustably screwed to the gear 54 is a disc 58 carrying two rollers 61 arranged to operate a switch 64. The operation of the switch 64 stops a continuous feed of the original web at the first entry position of a particular form-length of the web after it has been fed from the last entry of the preceding form and over the following form heading. The shaft 12, driving the copy web pin-wheels, is driven by pawl and ratchet mechanism, Fig. 4, in adjustable line steps at each imprinting cycle of the machine by a cam 44 engaging a follower 43. This engages a link 41 pivoted to a further link 40 oscillating a rocking arm 33 carrying two pawls 31 and (32 not seen). The pawl (32) engages with a line-spacing ratchet wheel 30 and the other pawl 31 engages with a ratchet 29 having a tooth or teeth to move the web a greater distance, e.g. equal to a copy form heading space. The ratchets 29, 30 are attached to a gear 27 free on the shaft 11 and which drives a gear 26 secured on shaft 12. When it is required to disconnect the drive of the copy web a solenoid 48 is energized and a connector 47 draws the link 41 free of the follower 43. The degree of line feed by the pawls 31, (32), is controlled by ratchet shields 38, 35, and a detent wheel 50 and a spring detent 51 accurately position shaft 12. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the arm 33 carrying the pawls 31, 32 is operated by the reciprocation of a Bowden cable actuated immediately after each printing operation. Specifications 408,125, 477,343 and 627,572 are referred to. Specifications 605,532, [Group XIX), and 648,729 also are referred to in the Provisional Specification.
