Abstract
577,678. Typewriters &c. WILLIAMS, W. P. (Standard Register Co.). Feb. 10, 1944, No. 2510. [Class 100 (iv)1 Paper-feeding arrangements.-In typewriters, tabulating machines, &c., feeding-devices for advancing separate paper strips, simultaneously through the machine are actuated by a common device with means for adjusting independently the amounts by which each strip is fed. The device, which may be formed as an attachment, is for use, for example, when the line spacing on a copy is required to be different to that on the original. As shown, one strip or series of strips 4, Fig. 3, is fed by a pinwheel 6 on the shaft 2 of the platen-roller 1 and the other strip or series of strips 5 is fed by a separate pin-wheel 7 on a shaft 8. Ratchetwheels 9, 10, Fig. 6, on the shafts 2, 8 are actuated by spring-pressed pawls 15, 24 pivoted to a member 11 guided by bolts engaging slots 12, 13 and reciprocated by a connection 29 to the machine. The pawl 15 is engaged during its inoperative movement by a ratchet shield 17 adjustable by a pin 19 on an arm 20 engaging one of three recesses 21 therein, the position of the arm determining the period during which the pawl 15 engages the ratchet wheel 9 and the amount of feed. In order to vary the operative stroke of the pawl 24, the bolt 27 engaging the slot 13 is mounted eccentrically on its base, so that by rotating the bolt 27, the distance of the member 11 and the pawl 24 from the ratchet wheel 10 is varied and the feed adjusted. At the ends of their feed strokes the pawls 15, 24 are forced into engagement with their ratchet wheels by stops 22, 28 respectively to prevent further advance thereof. Platen and feed roller rotation for condensedrecord work. Where the forms on the strips 4, 5 are of different length, separate means are provided which are similar for each strip for advancing each strip after printing so that the correct parts of the succeeding forms are brought into position for the next printing operation. Geared to the shaft 2 is a stub shaft 34 carrying a notched disc 35, the distance between the notches 38 being such that rotation of the shaft 2 sufficient to advance the strip 4 the length of one form would turn the disc 35 through a distance equal to the distance between two notches. A handle 36 carrying a pawl 37 which rests in one of the notches 38 at the begimiing of the feed of the strip 4 is freely mounted on the stub shaft 34 and movable through a predetermined distance. During the advancement of the strip 4 by the pinwheel 6, the disc 35 moves past the pawl 37 a corresponding distance. After the printing, the handle 36 is moved from one extreme position to the other and during such movement the pawl 37 re-engages the corresponding notch 38 so as to operate the pin-wheel 6 and complete the feeding of a form through the machine. A similar device is provided for the pin wheel 7. Paper guides.-The strip 4 passes over guides 46, 47 to and from the platen 1, and the strip 5 similarly passes over a guide-bar 49 and a guide 48. A roller 51 which co-operates with the pinwheel 7 is carried by a spring-pressed arm 52 and can be swung to an inoperative position. Friction feeds may be used instead of pin wheel feeds.
