Abstract

Materials consisting wholly or partly of wool are shrink- or felt-proofed by treatment in an aqueous bath containing a water-soluble chlorite and an aldehyde of the formula RCHO, where R is hydrogen, a CHO group, a carboxyl group, an alkyl or unsaturated alkyl or aryl group or a substituted alkyl or aryl group, which aldehyde is free from amino groups, the pH of the bath being between 4-9 and the temperature between 0 DEG -100 DEG C, and the concentration of the chlorite and the time of treatment being such that between 5 per cent and 30 per cent of chlorite (calculated on the weight of material under treatment) disappears from the bath during the treatment. In a modification, the chlorite and aldehyde are employed in separate baths maintained under the same pH and temperature conditions, the material being passed through both baths in succession and in either order. Preferred chlorites are those of the alkali and alkaline earth metals. In Examples the following aldehydes are employed: formaldehyde, glyoxal, benzaldehyde, acetaldehyde, lauryl aldehyde, phenyl acetaldehyde, n-heptaldehyde glyoxylic acid, 8-hydroxy valeric aldehyde, vanillin, isobutyraldehyde, chloral hydrate, crotonaldehyde, acrolein and n-butyraldehyde. The desired pH is obtained by buffering with sodium acetate, acetic acid, sodium dihydrogen phosphate and sodium hydroxide.
